The Permafrost Research Group (www) is part of the larger Snow, Ice and Permafrost Group at the Geophysical Institute (GI). The group has conducted a significant number of projects related to seasonally and perennially frozen ground, its physical properties and behavior under changing environment. At this moment, the Group includes three faculty members and three graduate students. The GI has a well-staffed and modern electronic and machine shops and computer facility.

Vladimir Romanovsky has been actively participating in the GI Permafrost Group activities since 1992. His main research interests are the scientific and practical aspects of environmental and engineering problems involving ice and permafrost. These include problems in the areas of soil physics, thermodynamics, heat and mass flow, and growth and decay processes that are associated with permafrost, subsea permafrost, seasonally frozen ground, and seasonal snow cover. He is also interested in the improvement of mathematical methods (analytical and numerical modeling) in geology and geophysics.
