The Soil Physics, Ecohydrology and Groundwater Quality Group (www) is responsible for teaching and research that is focused on the water, energy, and mass transfer in the water unsaturated soil zone in relation with groundwater, vegetation, and atmosphere. Primary research programs are water and reactive solute transfer in heterogeneous porous media, effect of vegetation on local hydrology (and feedbacks), peatland hydrology and remote sensing techniques to quantify peat forests and stochastic modeling of flow and transport in heterogeneous groundwater systems.
Sjoerd van der Zee is the head of faculty and professor in the Soil Physics, Ecohydrology and Groundwater Quality Group. His main interests are flow and transport in complex porous media, taking the feedback mechanisms of crops and vegetations into account.
